题目:Global Evolution of Environmental and Social Disclosure in Annual Reports

Abstract: We study environmental and social (E&S) disclosures in annual reports. Using the word embedding model to examine over 210,000 annual reports from 24,271 public firms in 30 international countries/regions between 2001 and 2020, we create an E&S dictionary that allows us to document trends in annual report E&S disclosure. Specifically, we find: 1) increases in length, boilerplate language, and the use of infographics, and 2) decreases in specificity. Our results also suggest that E&S disclosure quality improves after the adoption of voluntary ESG reporting frameworks but deteriorates after disclosure mandates. Our findings provide systematic evidence on the evolution of E&S disclosures in annual reports over the past two decades and shed light on how voluntary and mandatory standards have jointly shaped global E&S reporting practices.

题目:Does Provincial Gambling Culture Affect Corporate Innovation? Evidence from China

Abstract: We examine the impact of provincial gambling culture on the local firms’ R&D expenditure. We find that local gambling culture, measured by the regional lottery sales revenue per capita, promotes local firms’ R&D expenditure. Our result is robust to endogeneity corrections using the 2SLS approach, controlling for firm fixed effects and the neighbouring regional gambling culture. The mechanism test reveals that the provincial gambling culture affects corporate innovation by increasing the local firms’ managers’ risk-taking attitude. Moreover, the moderation tests show that local social trustworthiness, local GDP growth, and economic policy uncertainty positively impact our main finding. Our result is more pronounced for firms with high risk-taking behaviour and non-SOEs. Finally, the provincial gambling culture produces low innovation outcomes but results in high innovation quality in the long run.
